During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Senator Dick Durbin called for the resignation of Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen over the policy of separating children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border and the government's lame efforts to reunify those families.
The committee questioned officials from the Boarder Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice.
"...on her watch, and under he leadership, that nearly 2,700 children were separated from their parents and more than 700 children still have not been reunited with their families, including more than 400 whose parents were apparently departed, and more than 90 whose parents can't be located at all."
Senator Durbin quoted a tweet from Nielsen in which she said there was no such policy, and someone behind him held up a poster board with a picture of the tweet.
We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period.— Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen (@SecNielsen) June 17, 2018
